01A language for understanding yourself

Numerology is the practice of reading meaning in the numbers that come from your date of birth and your name. The most widely used approach today is linked to the Greek mathematician Pythagoras (around the 6th century BC), who believed numbers sit at the root of everything, and that each number from 1 to 9 carries its own kind of energy.

From your date of birth and full birth name, you can work out numbers such as your Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge and Personality, along with cycles that run by year and by stage of life. Put together, they form a map that points to your strengths, your lessons and your timing.

Did you know?

Your date of birth never changes, so the numbers that come from it show your “core.” Your name can change, so the numbers that come from it show how you express that core to the world.

02Each number has a character

NumberMain energyCommon lesson
1Pioneering, independent, decisiveCooperating, listening
2Sensitive, intuitive, connectingTrusting yourself
3Creative, expressive, optimisticFocusing, following through
4Disciplined, steady, practicalStaying flexible, letting yourself rest
5Free, adaptable, adventurousStability, moderation
6Loving, responsible, caringCaring for yourself too
7Reflective, wise, inward-lookingOpening up and sharing
8Strong, accomplished, good at managingBalancing material and inner life
9Compassionate, idealistic, generousLetting go, living in the present

03Use it as a mirror, not a forecast

Numbers show tendencies, and the choices are always yours. The most useful way to work with numerology is to compare: read a description, then ask yourself where it fits you, where it doesn't, and what you want to do with it.

  • It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or psychological counseling.
  • It is not a tool for judging people or comparing one person with another.
  • It does not make decisions for you about school, work, relationships or money.

Ask yourself

When was the last time you read about a personality type and thought, “That's exactly me”? What did it help you do differently?

04What you need to make your chart

  • Your date of birth (day, month and year, as on your birth certificate).
  • Your full birth name: used for your Expression, Soul Urge and Personality Numbers and your name chart.
  • The name you go by (if it's different from your birth name): shows what the name you use every day adds to your chart.
